Commandant's Corner I'm getting started early in hopes of getting ahead of Eddie, our editor. Our Coffee/Safety Break kicked off the start of summer and went well. Thanks to Ed Higginbotham for filling in our vacant shifts and providing a stranded motorist his own spare tire. Traffic was slow but we did ok.Thanks to Pamida of Mt. Vernon who donated the soda for the event, We had about 20 cases left over for our picnic and next Coffee/Safety Break. On Memorial Day. Menno Perks and our Honor Guard performed twice and looked great. After the honors performed at VFW Post 3404, we were asked to supply the Honor Guard and seven man firing detail for next year. Thanks to Nolan Moody's assistance and continued PR work, we are looking much better. Our new trailer worked out super for the Coffee/Safety Break and is now decked out with our Detachment name and logo's. It is looking good and is obviously a Marine Corps trailer.June 3rd Sunday Service was busy installing a new top on an MG with the assistance of Adam Steketee's Dad, Craig. Adam is being deployed the 15th to Mississippi for twomonths of training. His next duty atation is unknown at this time. Will advise when we know more. After picking up our colors from Eddie, I made a 4 1/2 hr drive to the State Convention in Cape Girardeau. After filling up on hot dogs, scotch and scuttle butt, I turned in around 2400 and was up at 0530 for breakfast and the meeting. We were advised that State is increasing dues from $3.00 to $5.00 as of 1 Sept. 2007, K.C. is confirmed as holding next years Department Convention. MCL National Convention will be held Aug 5-11 2007 in Albuquerque N.M and the Midwest Division Spring Conference will eb held 18-20April 2008, in Watertown, South Dakota. At the end of the meeting, I excused our Detachment and headed for home, not staying for the Banquet as my presence was required for Sunday Services. Services were light with only 4 Marines in attendance, with one falling asleep. Paul Primas is looking good after his new wiring job. I did notice we still have a lot of friends in other detachments around the state and this was one corpsman, who was glad to see them. I had two Marines help me navigate across the parking lot safely and keep me out of trouble. During our June meeting, Life Member Jerry Schutz was honored for his years of work and dedication to the MCL and our Detachment. I was proud to present this Marine with the Marine of the Year medallion and ribbon. OH RAH Jerry!! Saturday, June 16 wasthe Detachment Picnic at the home of Menno Perks. He cooked a “Cajun Boil” with fire under a large copper pot. This resulted in 12 feet of table covered with tiger prawns, corn on the cob, red potatoes and kielbasa sausage. A wide assortment of salad's and great desserts were also provided. Those that missed this event missed out on a ton of excellent food and drink. I received a phone call from Past Commandant Ken Anderson who is still working on a new Detachment in Oklahoma. He has invited any and all members to be guest at his meetings. Ken is a charter member of Detachment 993. Paul pulled off another great Pistol Shoot on June 22, with plenty of food and drink afterwards. Menno Perks was the Detachment winner for the second year in a row. As this is the time for planning various Detachment functions and events for the coming year, we request your input. Remember you make it happen. Semper Fi

Mt. Vernon Visitation Team Report
This report comes with a little catching up to do as I took a vacation in May to go to California. I had the opportunity to see my new 2 week old grandson, walk one of my daughters down the aisle and then drove to Tucson to see a granddaughter graduate from high school. In all my business, I missed my May report.
The May visit was pretty exceptional because our gifts were quite different. This time we brought tshirts and socks for all and they were greatly appreciated. I knew the visit would be a good one when I approached Jack Graham in the mess hall and asked “How is it going Professor?” He lit up and asked me how I knew, and the day just flowed on from there. Glen Sarhage immediately slipped his shirt on and called out for all to see.
In June I made the trip by myself but the fellowship was once again, great!! I brought with me another bag of cookies to share and they always open up the path to many good conversations. I remind you that not all of our residents are able to function as well as most of them but they still get the same respect and caring from us. It is always an honor to be able to stop and pray for any needs they may have. Our gifts this visit were greatly admired by all because of its content. It was a bumper sticker quoting former President Reagan “Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem.”
Once again I invite you to come with me at least once and visit our Marine buddies.
Bless the Lord today; for He blesses you everyday.
God Bless you all,
Ray Glynn

Theresa out did themselves. As for me, I had no idea they had such a beautiful view from their home and a perfect yard for our picnic get-together. Everyone who came, brought salads, snacks, and sweets. We even had home made ice cream. What a treat!! Hopefully, recipes will be shared. Ray and I felt bad about not staying to help with cleaning up, but our first grandson decided to come into the world that night. Cathi, our daughter, was in labor for six hours before the Doctor told us Cathi would have to have a C-Section. Cathi and the baby our doing fine. His name is Allan Lea Waite, (8 pounds 7 ounces-22 inches long). There will be a group of us going down to Mt. Vernon on July 14,2007. We will meet at the Price Cutter on Kansas Expressway and Republic Road, at 9:15 a.m. We expect to arrive at Mt Vernon around 10:00 a.m. Mary Lou Webb will bring 2 bottles of diet Sprite and Mickey Dees will bring 2 bottles of Sprite. This a party for our Veteran's to celebrate the 4th of July and all the birthdays which occurred during the past 6 months. The Cardinals Baseball games are working out great. Ladies you are all doing a great job! Our next game is July 9, 2007 with the following people working: Vicki Glynn, Lou Ann Stark, Mary Moloney, and Mickey Dee. I look forward to seeing all of you there. Speaking of Cardinals games, don't forget the “Semper Fi Night” game on August 24, 2007. This is a great way for us to show our support for one of our own. As I close this month I want to again say Thank You for your support and all that you are doing. See you at the next meeting on July 12, 2007

On June 16, at the beautiful home of Menno and Theresa Perks, a Cajun Boil Feast was enjoyed by the
many members and families in attendance. Detachment and Auxiliary members stuffed themselves full
of jumbo shrimp the size of your hand, corn on the cob, new potatoes and kielbasa sausage cooked in
cajun seasonings, along with a table full of sides and desserts. Members working the Cardinals game
in the days following, were discussing how to plan another Cajun Boil in the fall. Sounds great to me!!

Detachment Leads the Springfield Midtown Neighborhood Association's Annual Fourth of July
Parade.
On the 4th of July, the Detachment trailer was pulled by Mary Atkinson with your Commandant and Member Paul Primas
holding the National and Marine Corps Colors in place. They were followed by Ray Glynn and his custom painted '56 Ford,
Joe Hessler and his SUV, and Nolan Moody's Buick with Gurr-Burr riding along. All vehicles had our Flag sets and magnetic
MCL signage on the doors. The Flores kids threw candy out the back of the Commandant's pick-up with Eddie Flores and
wife Kim walking along the street doing the same. Good time was had by all.
As was noted in the May 2007 issue of the “Show-Me News”, on June 19th, in front of a full house at the Rogersville
Senior Center, to include Detachment members Paul Primas, Nolan Moody, Jeff Maloney and Eddie Flores, Chaplain Glynn
was presented the Senior Service Award by Lt. Governor Peter Kinder. Along with receiving the award, Ray was also presented
a framed Proclamation from the Missouri House of Representatives, by Rep. Bob Dixon and Rep. Mike Cunningham.
Ten days later, on June 29th, Chaplain Glynn was included in a group ten chosen out of 39 nominated as a Volunteer of
the Year at the Gift of Time Volunteer Recognition and Awards Luncheon. In the Springfield News-Leader article describing
the event, Glynn was noted as stating the following:
“I'm amazed by the generosity of people in the area. Glynn and his wife Vicki moved to Springfield from California about
three years ago. "We feel a lot more relaxed here," Raymond Glynn said. ”The people here have welcomed us in and I
have neighbors that would do anything for me.“ But that wasn't the case in California, according to the Glynn's. ”I'm as
active in the community as he is and I just love it,“ Vicki Glynn said. ”Everybody seems to know each other and there's a
very real spirit of people wanting to help one another.“
When I recently congratulated our current Marine of the Year on his community recognition for the work he has done over
the past year, he advised that he is being interviewed by the local 417 magazine. But to rest assured, ”my hat still fits. I will
be glad to have this all over“.
Note to Ray: Enjoy the spotlight, it is well deserved!!
1. House Approves Record VA Bill
VFW is hailing last Thursday’s House of Representatives vote of 409-2 as a landmark decision that follows through on campaign
promises to boost Department of Veterans Affairs funding. Commander-in-Chief Gary Kurpius called it an unprecedented
budget that will enable the VA to better plan and care for our wounded veterans of past, present and future.
- Specifically, H.R. 2642, the 2008 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill, would increase the VA budget
$6.7 billion above 2007 levels. It would hire 1,100 more VA claims adjudicators to help reduce a backlog of more than
685,000 compensation and pension and education claims. It would provide $600 million for three ”Centers of Excellence“ in
mental health care, and five polytrauma centers to care for the needs of thousands of men and women returning from Iraq
and Afghanistan with serious mental and physical conditions. The bill would increase VA maintenance and repair budgets.
And, for the benefit of Category 7 and 8 veterans, the House bill rejects an administration proposal to create annual enrollment
fees and raise prescription co-payments for almost 2 million veterans with nonservice-connected disabilities.
- On the Defense Department side, H.R. 2642 would provide a record $21.4 billion for military construction, family housing,
and base realignment and closure actions. The increase would equate to better barracks, family housing and training facilities.
It supports the relocation of 70,000 troops from bases in Korea and Europe to U.S. soil, and provides funding to
increase military strength by 65,000 soldiers, 27,000 Marines, and 9,000 National Guard and Reserve troops.
- Kurpius said the bill lives up to the specialized healthcare needs of today’s war veterans, and improves force structure and
quality of life programs for our servicemembers and their families. He now urges the Senate to act quickly on their version of
the bill so that a consolidated funding package can reach the president before Oct. 1. It has been eight years since the VA
was able to begin a new fiscal year with a fully-funded, on-time budget.
Hospital Corpsmen Celebrate 109 Years MCB CAMP LEJEUNE -- Affectionately called ”Devil Docs,“ Navy Hospital
Corpsmen have been attached to Marine units since the Spanish-American War. The 2nd Marine Division recently honored
the establishment of the Navy Hospital Corps in a ceremony at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune this month. The
Navy Hospital Corps is the only all-enlisted corps in the U.S. military and one of the oldest ratings in the Navy. It's also the
most decorated -- 21 Medals of Honor have been awarded to corpsmen, most of them posthumously.
At the ceremony, Marine Brig. Gen. David H. Berger, assistant division commander, 2nd Marine Division, gave a speech
to honor the Navy Hospital Corps' past and present sacrifices. ”There are 14 Naval ships named for corpsmen,“ Berger
said. ”That says a lot about the respect that the Navy and the Marine Corps have for corpsmen.“ Corpsmen have become
an integral part of the Marine Corps. They go everywhere the Marines go, supporting every mission. Marines would struggle
to complete a mission without the corpsmen's support. ”When a Marine goes down, the mission continues, but when a corpsman
goes down, the unit stops,“ Berger said. Everything comes to a screeching halt.“
Following the speech, the narrator, Chief Petty Officer Shawn Lawson, the battalion chief for 2nd Tank Battalion, read messages from the commander of Marine Forces Command, the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy and the Force Master
Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. A detail wheeled a cake out for the oldest corpsman, 57-year-old Senior Chief
Petty Officer Larry Tentinger with 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division; and the youngest corpsman, 21-
year-old Petty Officer 3rd Class Jacob Tribett with 8th Marine Regiment. Much like the Marine Corps Birthday tradition, Berger
served the cake to the oldest corpsman first, who represents the past, and then the youngest, who represents the future.”I was very honored to be the oldest corpsman,“ Tentinger said. ”In 2003, I was told I was the oldest line corpsman in Iraq.“
The ceremony ended as the 2nd Marine Division Band played ”Follow Me“ -- the 2nd Marine Division song, along with ”Anchors Aweigh,“ and ”The Marines' Hymn“ -- a fitting close to a ceremony honoring the respect Marines have for their
corpsmen. ”There's not a whole lot of difference between Marines and corpsmen,“ Berger said. ”That's why we wear the
same uniform.“
