“THE SHOW-ME NEWS”
December 2007, Volume IX, Number XII

Commandant's Corner
Greetings Marines, Corpsman, Auxiliary and Associate Members:

This last month has seen a flurry of activity which included the Honor Guard at MSU on Veteran's Day. For those of you that did not make it out, it rained, but activities were moved inside and yes we did fire three volleys inside the auditorium. The Memorial Team arrived for MSU breakfast as a full unit in our new rain coats and boy, did they look sharp!! From MSU, the team went to lunch at a local restaurant and was treated to lunch by a lady patron who picked up the check for the whole team. From there it was off to the Sunshine Elementary School, where we demonstrated, to all the students, how to fold the flag and what each fold represented. Then we went outside to raise the colors for the school, this was all arranged by Eddie Flores and team. Great job and Oh yes, the school event was covered by both Channel 3 and 10 and yes, it was aired on both. We also participated in several funerals. Nolan was busy with Toys for Tots at Bass Pro for two weekends and could have used more help, but we did raise over $1200.00. This weekend saw Ray Dees, Paul Primas, Auxiliary President Mickey Dees and me attending the state quarterly meeting in Jefferson City. We received the latest State By-laws. State is trying to organize a trip to Quantico, the Marine Corps Museum and a tour of DC in July or Aug of 2008. They need about 45 people with the trip lasting a week with a cost of about $800.00 per person. I also need to submit a nominee for Department Marine of the Year at the next meeting am asking for recommendations. The annual Christmas Dinner will be on December the 13th.The I and I staff and families will be dinning with us this year, so we should have a good time. Ed Higgenbotham has been out goldbrickin' with a heart attack last week and spent 3 days in the hospital. I hear Jerry Schultz is still in there fighting but having a hard time getting out, so drop by and wind him up. I will clear off for now by saying this is the Best Marines and Ladies Auxiliary a person would ever want to know. You have done a Great Job this year and have shown tremendous support for your Detachment and fellow marines. If I do not get to personally say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, I will say it here.

Mt. Vernon Visitation Team Report

On the 17th of November, the League and the Auxiliary combined efforts to present our Mount Vernon Veterans with a great Marine Corps birthday party. The Auxiliary once again came through in grand style, providing cake, drinks and all the implements to go along with them. Each Vet. was presented with a booklet the ladies assembled, containing letters from Commandant Frank Atkinson and Auxiliary President Mickey Dees along with several bits of Marine Corps history, such as the origin of the blood stripe, the term “Devil Dogs”, the significance of the eagle, globe and anchor, how Semper Fi came into being, etc.

We met in a private room shortly after the residents finished their lunch. We opened up with the singing of the Marine's Hymn and all were in great voice. We then cut the cake and the oldest, Betty Stewart presented the first piece to the youngest Marine, Mike, an employee of the home. As we partied on, each resident was asked to personalize their Marine Corps history- where they attended boot camp, how long they were in, and in what capacity they served, and where their duty stations were. It was great to hear the pride and loyalty in their stories as each one was so willing to share. Even Connie, Priscilla, Bill Thomson and myself told of our careers in the Corps.

Marie Thomson sure does play a great piano and led us all in singing some oldies but goodies. Everyone enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to the Christmas party. We took along another 204 bibs and some pajamas and slippers from Mrs. Ethel Wilson.
We closed with the second rendition of the Marine's Hymn and even those confined to wheelchairs, stood up and came to attention. SEMPER FI.

Why do we spend so much time focusing on the concerns of the world we'll soon leave, and so little time of the eternity we're headed for?

God Bless You All,
Ray Glynn
Chaplain

Honor Guard Makes a Grand Entrance

On the rainy morning of Veteran's Day, members of the Memorial Team and detachment took part in the Veteran's Breakfast at MSU. As noted in the Commandant's Corner, as members walked into the ballroom in the raincoats, other guests certainly took notice. After enjoying a nice breakfast, we proceeded to the auditorium for the memorial ceremony. With a steady rainfall coming down, Marines do as they have always done, they adapted to the terrain and attached the flag to the stage curtain for a proper raising. After inspecting the height of the ceiling and with approval from university officials, it was decided the rifle volley would also proceed as planned. When the signal was given, the M-1's came alive with visible flashes from the muzzles. What a sight...and sound. It was a nice tribute to those that gave all in the name of freedom and honor.
Following a free lunch courtesy of an admirer of the Commandant, the team proceeded to Sunshine Elementary for a flag folding assembly in front of the student body. With television cameras covering the event, Ray Glynn explained the meaning of each of the fold while members of the detachment, along with a few students, properly folded the flag. As luck would have it, the rain stopped and we were able to escort the flag outside and raise it up the pole. We received very positive feedback from the teachers and proper coverage from the news stations. I would like to thank all members of the detachment who assisted in making the two events special.
