May 2008, Volume X, Number 5

Meets at 7:00PM, the 2nd Thursday of the month
at Fleet Reserve Association
305 W Park Central Square, Downtown Springfield

Our last meeting saw the installation of 2007-2008 officers by Sr. Vice Commandant Don Ferral. Our meeting was short with the past officers receiving their awards and the members receiving their 5 and 10 year pins. If you were not present and did not receive your 5 or 10 year pin see me at the next meeting and I will pass them out. Again we are looking at a busy year ahead with safety brake sign up and our first brake

just around the corner. Menno has already started working on the Detachment Picnic of BBQ ribs this year. Our memorial team is now doing two or three memorials per week average so if you can, we need a few more members for our team. Even if you are only available one day a week. Our next meeting will be last call for members to attend our state convention so if you would like to attend let myself or Paul Primas know. I would like to say I will continue to work for the betterment of the Detachment in the up coming year and thanks to all for your support. Also on a closing note I am extremely proud to be called a marine with being a sailor and all. I can only say thanks to all and I will continue to try and uphold your highest of standards.
Thank you to all and Semper Fi
Frank

No minutes from April as we had
installation of Officers.

Hi Ladies
Summer is almost upon us. Last month our meeting went very well. I want to thank everyone for
attending. Our new officers were installed by our dear past president, Theresa Perks. Thanks Theresa for a great job.
We are not going to have a meeting this month. Instead we will meet at Macaroni Grill at
6:00pm for a girls nite out. I will call everyone to get a head count. I look forward to seeing you there.

As always bless our Marines and families.

Mt Vernon visit

Our April trip to visit our Vets at Mt. Vernon was truly a rewarding one as we got to meet our four newest residents. Here are the names and a little about each one of them:

1. Lloyd Haggard, United States Marine Corps, served from 1951 to 1954. Mr. Haggard served in Korea and received the Purple Heart. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years. He and his wife, Margaret, have 3 children. He moved to the home on January 23rd.

2. Bertha Johnson, United States Marine Corps, served from 1943-1944. This Brooklyn, NY native married a Greene County native in 1944 and they moved to Springfield. She was an LPN and worked at St. John's Hospital. She moved in January 28th.

3. Mary M. Lee, United States Marine Corps, served for 1944 to 1946 at Parris Island. Mrs. Lee lived in Verona on a farm for 60 years. She and her husband, John, have 2 children, John and Vickie. She moved to the Missouri Veterans Home on January 31st.

4. Michael Pennington, Untied States Marine Corps, served from 1963-1966. The San Diego, Ca. native owned and operated an insurance business. He retired in 1998. Mr. Pennington has 2 children. He moved to the Missouri Veterans Home on March 26th.

Joe Thurman, Connie and myself were well received by all and it was a great first meeting. Our long time resident Dwight Coulson has been elected to the office of President of the Resident Council. I'm sad to report that one of our residents Mitchell Whardo has departed our ranks.

Need a motto for your life? Try this: To God be the glory.

Commandant Frank Atkin's Mother-in-law Passed away. There will be no funeral service, she wished to be cremated and her ashes sprinkled around a favorite tree at Frank & Merry’s house. She had lived with them for several years, Merry is the only living relative.
Her name is Beatrice Kerr.
Merry requested no flowers, said instead if anyone wants to just to donate to the Marine Corps fund that helps Marine families. (Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund)
