As I look back on my service, both in the Navy, and in the Marine Corps league, there is one thing that has always meant a great deal to me. I recall as a young Corpsman what a great feeling it was to be accepted by the Marines I served, and served with as an important member of the team. Now, being elected as your Commandant, I again feel that same pride, respect and Esprit De Corps. As I looked around the room in December at the detachment that elected me, I was humbled and at the same time proud to be a part of such an organization. I accept your vote as a sign of confidence in my ability to lead this detachment and I will do my best to live up to your expectations.
I feel that we, as a team, can move forward from here to build an even stronger detachment than we currently have. I would like to concentrate our attentions on those things that build camaraderie and draw in new members while still being able to support our fund raising goals and perform our community service obligations.
I will rely heavily on your input. Remember, this is YOUR detachment. I do not plan to make all of the decisions for this detachment without your input and advice. I would like to see more of you at our staff meetings. This is where we do our planning and is the best place to introduce new ideas. We are looking at ways to make the staff meetings as productive as possible. We have changed the date of staff meetings to the Saturday immediately following our regular meeting to give more time between the staff meeting and the regular meeting to get things done. This also gives the editor more time to publish the newsletter. We want to make our staff meeting as convenient as possible for everyone who wants to attend. If you have ideas on ways to improve membership, increase camaraderie, or better support the goals and objectives stated in our bylaws, it is your responsibility to share those ideas. If you know of past members who are still in the area, I would like you to encourage them to come back and give us another try.
